Taz's diary - Need to do this!

Well I braved the scales this morning and the damage is 2lb so I have to lose that by Wednesday for STS! Also, I had a text nice and early this morning and we have to meet with our client this afternoon but not til after 2pm so I can have dinner before I go out!

Ok so I have been making some decisions! Last week I enquired about monthly membership to our local leisure centre and found out that it is £34.75 per month for unlimited gym, swim and classes. That is actually cheaper than most gyms alone! BUT it's only a good price if I am going to use it to more than it's value. It costs £3.10 to go swimming and £5 to use the gym so I worked out last night that if I was to go back to swimming on a tuesday evening which I was going to do anyway, and add a gym session followed by a swim on a Sunday that would cost £11.20 per week, £44.80 per month to pay as I go. That's only 3 sessions a week, totally sustainable and I would also have the freedom to go swimming or to the gym any time I liked. So I'm thinking it would be a really good idea to do that. I just need to make sure I get my arse there a minimum of those 2 days in the week!

hey hunni

I have been a member of a gym a few times. I loved it when I started cos I was all motivated and went loads. But gradually it trailed off and in the end I had to leave as I felt it was a waste on money. Also I lost my job and so couldnt afford it anymore. I then started renting some gym equipment which is great as I can exercise at home when I want to, while watching TV. I could change it evry couple of months too. Eventually I bought a couple of the things I had rented as they sell them off cheap. xx

I don't think it would work for me Taz. There is always something popping up that gets in the way and once it becomes a chore I would end up rebelling against it. I LOVE swimming but it is a hassle finding the time to go and I HATE the afterwards bit when you get dry, you smell awful even after the shower and hair wash and you just can't get your hair right. You really DO have to chose when you do it! The gym - well I get all fired up then lose the will to live. Good luck with your decision Taz - I hope you're better at it than me x

I have some exercise equipment here, I have a bike, stepper, air walker, gym ball and thigh trainier but we only have a one bed flat and we have quickly outgrown it so there is no room to actually use the equipment! Also, due to the slump in the market we are in negative equity so we can't buy a bigger place yet!

I have also been a member of a gym before, I started off going 3 times a week then I changed jobs so it wasn't easy to get there and I stopped going. The leisure centre one doesn't involve a contract so if I felt my commitment slipping then I could just cancel it. I love swimming but I quite often don't have the money to go when I want to and I think if I have unlimited access I could go on my days off aswell

Sorry Taz - I did'nt mean to be negative up there. I really DO love swimming and always have. I have been going quite a lot lately and have increased the amount of lengths I can do and improved my times. I also like using the gym equipment and find it quite a good prompt to exercise the right muscles. The problem is I find myself resenting it instead of enjoying it when I HAVE to do it. Try it for a few months and see how you get on and keep doing the sums x

Sorry Gem, I missed your earlier post! I totally get what you are saying, I have also done that in the past and when I started the martial arts I though the same thing would happen but my mindset has changed. I HAVE to lose the weight and I HAVE to improve my fitness for my Black Belt grading in November. I have seen others doing their's and they are throwing up and passing out where they are just not prepared for it physically and I don't want to be one of those people! As there is no contract I could easily cancel it if I found I wasn't using it. It would only be 2 days a week, one of which I used to swim anyway and want to go back to, so technically it's only an extra bit of activity on a Sunday which could make a big difference

If you think it will work for you then go for it. Good luck with all the extra exercise - I know you are no stranger to it x

I'm not 100% sure I could stick to it but I'd like to give it a go. I would like to be one of those people who loves to exercise! I do love swimming and I'm not too fussed about the getting changed bit after either, it's the motivation to actually go out that I struggle with. I think maybe I have to get Mr Taz to give me a gentle nudge on a Sunday or find someone else who will join me and spur me on. I always feel energised after my MA training and I know I will feel good after the gym so I think I need to give it a good go and see if it will work for me

Thanks Gem, I just spoke to a friend and she wants to join too! Also my mum has been going swimming quite a bit lately so I could join her sometimes!

I reckon you mum would like that a lot Taz x

thats cool that you dont have to enter into a contract, cos thats what always puts me off, ive been there before and know i wont keep it up. my weekly swimming is all i can stick to! x

Yeah it's the lack of contract that is attracting me! I will give it a go for a few months and keep a note of how much I use it and see if it is worth it

I suppose the risk is minimal with no binding contract Taz so it's trial and hopefully no error x

I joined the gym today! I can now gym and swim whenever I like and not have to worry about finding the cash for it! I have my gym induction tomorrow and I will also go for a swim. That will kick me off nicely!

Wow Taz - you got that moving quick!!!
