Neris and India's Idiot-Proof Diet: Pig to Twig!

I know, it's a lot. But they say it's important to take them all. I looked at physllium husks in H&B a few weeks back, as was considering taking them. They are £10 a bottle alone.

But all of these protect your body, they are worth it. :D

Hmmm. Thanks. I take psyllium anyway on LL or Atkins to help keep everything passing through - had one very bad experience on LL once and never want that again!!!! I take an omega oils supplement - I wonder if that would count for the fish oils, both are essential fatty acids aren't they?
I think Chromium also helps reduce appetite - it stabilises blood sugar or something like that. Can't really see why you'd need extra B and C vits on top of a good multi-vit though.
Oh well, food for thought, will mull those over. Tesco and Boots do pretty cheap own-brand ones now.

Morning all, well its the dreaded weekend. I am on my own in the house which normally means I can gorge myself on whatever I want without anyone knowing. Does anyone else have a past of secret eating? I would make a sandwich whilst cooking yes for example and hide it under a tea towel or behind something if my other half came in? I would eat 2 or 3 bags of crisps then make sure I put the empty bags inside each other so it just looked like one. How sad. But today I am cooking up breakfast, sausages mushrooms and eggs and if I want to eat more I will make sure that its low carb and diet friendly. Am off into town later to treat myself to a little something. Hope you all have a fan weekend. Oh and on the supplements, I bought most from tesco and spent less than 20 quid in total I think. I already had multi, and vit c didn't bother with the Coenzyme one

Morning all.

Can anybody see a reason why the multivits have to be without iron? I already have some good ones with iron that I was planning to use when I went low carb. Can you OD on iron?

Good tip on buying from tesco. Were the Physllium husks cheaper in there?

am thinking of buying this book to have a look at but am concerned about the costs of the supplements. what are the reasons given for needing them? i've never known them needed on other low carb diets?

abz xx

The reasons given for the supplements are as follows
Multi vit to keep you nutritionally healthy whilst being on restrictive diet
Husks to stop constipation
Chromium to build musle decrease body fat and help lower cholesterol
Fish oils cause they are good for you
No reason for vit b or c
Coenzyme q10 for energy.

U did read somewhere the reason for avoiding multis with iron but I can't remember where so will need to have a look and get back to you

I can't write much now - got a viewing on my house (SELL, PLEASE GOD SELL!) and need to get tidying... and cooking breakfast... arghhh - no time, no time!

I think the reason for the iron thing is because of the amount of protein we eat (isn't iron in red meat?) - and it is one of those things you don't want to have too much of...

That may not be the official reason, but hey.

Yep - I spent a lot of money on the supps, but I am a bit believer in you get what you pay for... I spoke to the woman at the health food shop (independent advisor, not commission based!) and she said the more expensive ones tend to be that way because of the way the body absorbs them.. they are made with extra specially small particles that go into the blood quicker... some of the cheap versions may say 100mcg, but you'll only actually get the benefit of around 50mcg... where as good brands like Solgar (the one recommended in the book) is manufactured to ensure maximum absorption.

Ok, this post is getting into a long one, so I might have well continue, hehe...

I'm off to the shops later, going to try and find a slow cooker - I really want to try the paprikash - Peachy, how did yours turn out?

I did ok yesterday - can't remember what I ate, but I was good... however I went out last night, and without thinking had a couple of no no drinks (literally two), but I wasn't even trying to rebel - I just switched off and didn't think twice. Arghhhh. So that's probably not been the best thing for my route into ketosis - DAMMIT... I'm going to treat myself to lots of lovely protein today... a nice brekkie, a good lunch when I get back from the gym... and some yummy dinner. :)

Hope you are all having a good day!

PS.. ref my earlier paragraph about supps... at the end of the day, we are in a credit crunch, and you can only afford what you can... I am simply explaining the difference in cost. I did Atkins before and didn't take ANY supps, and was ok - didn't feel great on occasion, but survived, hehe... but I think it is a good idea - whatever level you can afford :)

PPS... for fish oils, an omega capsule is perfick :D

i know that supplements with iron in can cause constipation, so since they're already telling you to tkae something to help rpevent it i guess it would be counter productive to also take something that can cause it

Re the iron thing. My understanding is that it's not dangerous to have too much of it but excessive amounts cause constipation and headaches or nausea in some people. Though if you're iron-sensitive and anaemic there is a gentler version of iron supplements you can't take. Can't remember what it's called now but I was prescribed it when pregnant - still puked though but I believe it works for some people. I guess as you're almost bound to be getting enough on a high-protein diet, they don't want to risk putting you off the diet with headaches.
With psyllium I usually wait til Holland and Barratt have it on special offer, then buy 2 or 3. I think you can sometimes get good deals online too.

Thanks. I know I'll be trying to get pregnant again soon so I'm sticking with Sanatogen pro-natal, pre-natal omega capsules and folic acid. Although it's a fair few months off it's good to get prepared and at this stage I don't want to take anything that isn't suitable for pre-conception.
One thing I find strange - I love fish but HATE the taste of any fish oil supplements. Anyone else find that?

It's because they are concentrated love. I hate it that sometimes I'm burping them all moring. UGH.

Morning fellow fat fighters!

Just woken up, pilled up and had some smoked salmon and scrambled eggs... mmmmm... got ANOTHER viewing this morning so got to get the pledge out again, then off to the gym.

I - naughtily - jumped on the scale this morning and it looks like I've lost 2lbs so far (started on Thurs).. so i'm happy with that, as usually it's not the best losses when going from a VLCD to, shortly after, another diet.

I was 11.6st when I finished LL, but crept up to 11st 10.5lbs in the two weeks following... I was 11st 8.5lbs this morning! YEY!

Peachy - you weighed yourself yet? When's your first week up??

xx

Well done Anna! That's a great start to your first week.

Thanks for the info all on the iron thing. Following the tip from IB, I checked out H&B online and they have pysllium husk capsules on at half price. I didn't want to wait and bought some solgar ones in my local health food store, as I figure that they really are something I should take whilst I am doing my meal replacement / low carb plan.

Am a good way through the Neris and India book and they make everything all so easy. It's a good read. It does seem much the same as Atkins. There are some good recipes to try.

It's a great book huh? Honestly, I was peeing myself when I read through the intro... I felt a real kinship, had no idea all my problems had been so stereotypical and common - if only more people spoke about how they felt then I wouldn't have felt like such a leper!

Anyway - just got back from the gym - feel so so good.. had a nice fillet steak with salad, and a handful of macadamia nuts.

I have the Solgar psyllium husk tablets too... but I'll be honest, I haven't taken them at all... I've taken the other supps, but I worry how the husks will affect me... I have anxiety linked with my IBS, and panic about needing the loo when I am out and about... the last thing I want is to 'need' to go more often? Sorry - TMI - but how do they affect you? I know what they are 'meant' to do, but not how it actually feels, if that makes sense...

Hi Anna
I don't know anything about IBS so you may still have to check with your doc but psyllium won't have you rushing to the loo. I've taken it whenever I'm on Atkins or LL. It's not a laxative at all, it's a fibre supplement. Fibre doesn't give you the runs, it helps you "go" properly. In fact, fibre is recommended to help fix diarrhoea as much as constipation. Your colon needs fibre in your food to help it grip on to everything and push it out (you did ask!!!!). In low-carb diets that can be a problem especially if you're not regular in the first place. Shouldn't give you any pain or stomach cramping or urgency. I find a teaspoon of psyllium in water each day keeps me fine. It's also handy on the VLCDs where sometimes you need a bit more "bulk" to keep things moving as it swells in your colon so you actually have enough to pass. It's pure fibre, pretty much no calories and tasteless. Often comes with friendly bacteria too. Weird texture in water but no taste so it's OK. I use Lepicol but they're all pretty much the same. Some have fancy herbs added and they should be avoided by some people, especially if you're considering pregnancy.
Hope this helps and wasn't too gruesome.

Hello all, well I weighed this morning and have lost 3.25lbs how exciting. First I thought, only 3lbs?? But then I thought about the fact I have eaten so much and now realise its fab

Hey Peachy, well done you!

On the psyllium husks, I have taken them today for the first time. Took them before my lunch and to be honest my stomach has started gassing up this afternoon, which worries me also. I too have IBS and suffer with trapped wind if I eat the wrong things. I am going to give it a few days and if I am still bloated, might have to think again. I won't be able to cope with bloating. Will let you know how it goes this evening and tomorrow. Hopefully as IB says, they should just do their work and not cause discomfort.

Sarah, did you take them with water? The powder version I take always says to drink one glass of water with the powder dissolved in it and then take another glass of water straight after it. I've never taken the capsules. I saw a digestive specialist once who was very insistent that dissolved in water was better for your stomach than capsules but I have no idea if that would be true for IBS sufferers. The shops seem to stock more capsules than powder so I guess most people prefer capsules. Hope you feel better soon and that they work for you. If not, I guess someone on here will know of an alternative.
x

Thanks IB. I took them with a glass of water. And have drunk loads this afternoon also. It might be coincidence. I have just had a salad, so will see if it calms down now I have eaten. It might just be that my body needs a few days to get used to them. Hopefully it's just them doing their magic!
