Sarah's Slim and Save Diary - 2 stone to lose......

Just had the mushroom pasta instead of last shake and it was quiet nice :)

I cook two Portobello mushrooms in the microwave and fill them with the mushroom pasta. Yum.

Actually, you're not... The Skinny Rules say divide your weight by 2 and that is the number of grams of protein you should have per day. By that rule, I'm almost always low.

Presumably that's your weight in lbs?? If it is that's not much protein is it? I'd only be able to have about 78gms - is that right? And what does an egg count as? Forgive me for being nosey and butting in, I'm always diet curious :):D x

Sorry for the hijack, Sarah.

Yes, in pounds.

I've been posting about the diet on several threads and this was discussed so somewhere, but I was unable to locate it.

But, 78 grams of protein is A LOT! A day of CD or Slim and Save is less than 40. The USDA requirements for an adult female is 46.

From the WEBMD website:

Protein: Are You Getting Enough?
Nutrition facts labels prominently display information about protein on the foods we buy. But of the three macronutrients in food -- protein, fat, and carbohydrates -- protein may be the one most of us know least about.

How much protein do you need to stay healthy? What's the best source of protein?

Protein requirements are complicated because the amount we need changes with age.

Infants require about 10 grams a day.
Teenage boys need up to 52 grams a day.
Teenage girls need 46 grams a day.
Adult men need about 56 grams a day.
Adult women need about 46 grams a day.
One important exception is pregnant or lactating women, when the recommended intake rises to 71 grams of protein a day.

Another way to count protein requirements is as a percentage of calories. The USDA's MyPyramid plan suggests that protein make up between 17% to 21% percent of total calories. The Institute of Medicine recommends we get at least 10% and no more than 35% of calories from protein.

Are You Getting Enough Protein?

Many of us might do well to add a few additional sources of protein.

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2003-2004 showed that 7.7% of adolescent females and about 8% of older adult women weren't hitting the minimum recommended amount of protein.

As a proportion of total calories, the median intake of protein in children was 13.4%, below the ideal range. Men aged 51 to 70 consumed 16% of their calories in protein, also a little below the recommended amount.

The Risks of Too Little Protein

That shortfall could mean trouble. Protein is important to many physiological functions, from building muscle and bone to keeping cells in good working order.

Recent studies suggest that protein makes a meal more satiating, which in turn could help people maintain a healthy weight. Indeed, a 2005 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that increasing protein from 15% to 30% of total calories -- and reducing fat from 35% to 20% of calories -- resulted in sustained weight loss.

Choosing the Healthiest Source of Protein

A wide variety of foods contain protein, from meat, fish, and dairy to beans, whole grains, nuts, eggs, and vegetables. A meat-eater can easily get all the protein he or she needs. But even vegetarians can meet their requirements if they choose with a little care.

How healthy a protein-rich food is typically depends on what else it contains. For example:

Meat is one of the leading sources of protein in the American diet. Some meat is also loaded with saturated fat, which is unhealthy. The healthiest choice is lean meat low in saturated fat.
Fish is an excellent source of protein, since the oils contained in fish help protect against heart disease.
Eggs are also abundant in protein, although they also contain dietary cholesterol, which can raise the risk of heart disease in people with elevated blood cholesterol levels.
Plants such as beans and nuts are a particularly wise choice of protein, since so many Americans fall short on fiber. Both beans and nuts are rich in fiber and plant-based phytochemicals that may help lower heart disease and cancer risk.

I had the cookies and cream shake and it was really nice :) and veg soup - that was ok.....

I've changed my evening meal to 1 poached egg, small amount of smoked salmon and green beans - so it feels more like a meal.

Sounds ideal. I've switched from a sirloin pattie (lean) to tuna. Higher protein. - a la The Rules!!!

There's loads of pics of celebs in bikinis around at the moment.... Thought I would post some for inspiration:-

Thanks hun, it's going ok.. Still feel very bloated though and I feel like I might be having 2 much lol x

To be perfectly honest with you Sarah I find that photograph FAR less attractive than some nice curves! She looks absolutely emaciated ... it's young girls aspiring to this kind of thing that is responsible for an awful lot of eating disorders ..... just mho - sorry. xx

@MinnieMel .... thank you sooo much for your trouble - that's really interesting. Of course - silly me ... I was making the mistake of thinking of 78gms of protein as - eg 78gms of chicken or turkey or something. I hadn't thought it through!! DUR!! ;) x

I was going to add more picture but I got caught using the Internet in work lol :)

I know what u mean though - looking at photos of celebs, airbrushed etc just makes me (and I'm sure others) feel worse about themselves x

Morning Sarah -

I hope you have a wonderful day! Good planning!

FF you are doing really well! First week is sooooo hard especially if like me you've tried for the zillionth time to get back into it! Hope to follow you through to your 2 stone which is what I'm aiming for and have been aiming for since January!

Hey Sarah,
Found you!
Good luck with your new plan hun, your doing great so far!

xx

WOW thanks for all the messages guys :)

I'm doing ok - its weird that I don't feel like I'm on a VLCD at the moment - I guess because there's more choice than the other diets I've done. Just hope I'm doing it ok?

I have had some milk today (in a cup of tea) and a can of coke zero.

I still feel very bloated but I'm sure that will do..... I feel like I'm having to much to get into ketosis but I might by some sticks at lunch to find out.

I've got an unexpected planned day off(ish) next weekend - I have decided to visit home next weekend and surprise my best friend for her birthday.... It looks like we might just end up having a take away and a catch up at her place - if this is the case I will have coke zero with me and have chicken and mushroom from the Chinese.... I should be able to pretty much stay on track.

My weigh day is Monday - hope I will lose a couple of LBS i'm not expecting a big loss though.... Slow and steady wins the race!!

Good planning.

Well done so far, water will help with any bloating!

Don't waste money on keto sticks hun. You will be in k after a few days on plan

Keep up the good work Xx
